15 most highly anticipated movies of 2019 [guest post] Posted: 04 Mar 2019 12:03 PM PST Sabienna Bowman has been covering entertainment news since 2010. She currently writes for Bustle, Reelgood, and PopSugar. The 2019 movie season is off to a great start thanks to early hits like The Lego Movie 2, Fighting with My Family, and Happy Death Day 2U, but there’s still a whole bunch of cinematic goodness to come. Many of the most highly anticipated movies of 2019 are coming your way over the spring and summer months. From superheroes and sequels to creepy original horror concepts and biopics, there truly is something for everyone. This year is packed with exciting titles, so get ready to spend a whole lot of time at the theater. Can’t wait until then? Here’s a list of new movie releases that are currently available. Captain Marvel (March 8) Marvel’s first ever solo female-led film is already garnering positive early reviews. Brie Larson is fierce as Carol Danvers in the trailers, and if all goes well, Captain Marvel seems poised to be the future of the MCU. That alone makes this ’90s set superhero movie a must-see for Marvel fans. Us (March 22) Jordan Peele established his gift for horror with 2017’s Get Out. Now he’s back with an even more haunting tale about a family being stalked by their evil doppelgängers. The terrifying looking film has plenty of star power behind it as well thanks to Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, and Elisabeth Moss. Shazam! (April 5) In the wake of Aquaman‘s success, DC is continuing to lighten things up with Shazam!, the story of Billy Batson, a 14-year-old boy who can turn into an adult superhero at will. Zachary Levi, who perfected the art of portraying a childlike innocence on NBC’s Chuck, stars as the film’s grownup hero. That combined with a seemingly lighthearted tone makes this comic book movie look refreshingly fun. Hellboy (April 12) Improving on perfection isn’t possible, and the previous two Hellboy movies were pretty close to perfect. Still, if anyone can do the wisecracking, devilish hero justice it’s Stranger Things favorite David Harbour. Avengers: Endgame (April 26) Come on, would any most anticipated movie list be complete without Avengers: Endgame? The MCU as fans know it is about to change forever as the franchise’s original heroes band together to stop Thanos and bring back their friends. There will be epic battles, quips, and more tears than anyone wants to admit. One thing is certain: this is the movie event of the year. Rocketman (May 31) Taron Egerton’s performance as Sir Elton John looks nothing short of mesmerizing in this dreamy biopic. Music fans and movie lovers alike should have this Dexter Fletcher directed movie at the top of their must see list (especially if you like to keep an eye out for early Oscar contenders). Dark Phoenix (June 7) It’s Sophie Turner’s time to shine as the X-Men franchise gets a chance to do the classic Dark Phoenix story justice. Jean Grey is about to go dark, and if it’s handled well, it could be one of the best X-Men movies to date. Toy Story 4 (June 21) Woody and Buzz are back again in Toy Story 4, and it sounds like they’re going on a big adventure. Details about the plot are scarce, but there is a road trip in the toys’ future and a reunion with Bo Peep on the horizon. None of this sounds emotionally scarring, but since this is Pixar, you should probably stock up on tissues just in case. Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5) Spider-Man: Far From Home is the first post-Endgame MCU movie, and as such, it’s shrouded in mystery. The plot has Peter Parker and his pals going on a European vacation, but since the last time fans saw the web-slinger he was a pile of dust, there are plenty of questions about how and why he’s back in action. The Lion King (July 19) Disney has three live-action reboots coming to theaters in 2019, but The Lion King looks like the most promising by far. With a cast that includes Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Beyoncé, it’s hard to imagine this movie being anything other than a success. And when you add in the stunning visuals it feels like a slam dunk. The Kitchen (August 9) Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss star in this ’70s set movie about three mob wives who take over their husbands’ business after they’re sent to jail. There’s no trailer just yet, but with a strong premise and stellar cast this feels like a movie worth rooting for. It: Chapter Two (September 6) The adult Losers’ Club reunites 27 years after the events of the first movie to take down Pennywise for good. That’s easier said than done though, especially since they’re all still traumatized by the events of that fateful summer in one way or another. Zombieland: Double Tap (October 11) It’s been 10 years since the classic horror comedy forever linked Twinkies with the Zombie apocalypse. Now Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin are finally back for more. In terms of plot details, everything is being kept quiet, but this long-awaited sequel could be about anything and we’d still want to see it. Frozen II (November 22) Elsa, Anna, and their pals are back with more catchy songs and what appears to be a darker tone in Frozen 2. Again, plot details are scarce, but the first teaser reveals the animation is even more beautifully rendered than before. Star Wars: Episode IX (December 20) Whatever your feelings about the last Star Wars film are, there’s no way anyone’s going to miss the conclusion to the modern trilogy — hey, you might even finally find out who Rey’s parents are. This year is packed with exciting movies big and small, but these 15 are absolute can’t-miss films. Looking for more entertainment recommendations?
