Q&A with On My Block co-creators Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:05 AM PDT

Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft are co-creators and executive producers of Netflix's On My Block, the hit series that returns for its second season (available to stream now exclusively on Netflix). The pair, who are longtime writing-producing partners, also wrote for All Eyez On Me (the Tupac Shakur biopic), and such television series as Empire and Gang Related. We had a chance to ask them the questions on everyone's mind about the series.

on my block interview

1. Let's hear your elevator pitch for streamers who haven't yet seen On My Block.

JH: In a world of stereotypes, On My Block offers a rare multi-faceted and authentic glimpse into the lives of a group of teenagers of color living in the dangerous (but vibrant) inner-city neighborhood of Freeridge, California.

EG: It’s a universal coming of age story — except the heroes in our stories are kids of color set in a world rarely seen on TV.

2. What do fans have to look forward to in season 2?

JH: An amazing Ruby-Jasmine dance. Cesar takes his shirt off. Many, many times. Jamal’s go-bags go next level! Think shark repellent!

Monse moves on from hoodies to some high-end clothes! And wait for a new ‘do! Ruby and Abuelita explore the meaning of life. And who will need floaties in the pool?

EG: The Roller-Coaster ride that is Monse and Cesar’s relationship. Ruby and Jamal speaking in vocal fry. Seeing the other side of Jasmine. And, Chivo…need I say more?

3. Describe season 2 of On My Block in 3 words.

JH: Why three words? Or Money. Gangs. Love.

EG: How about five words — You. Won’t. Believe. This. Ending.

4. Which character do you relate to the most and why?

JH: I definitely relate to Jamal the most. I love weird, crazy things just like Jamal — coincidence or not? I’m pretty sure the Loch Ness monster and the Yeti are cohabitating somewhere in New Jersey, and I will find them! And I will have a go-bag with me!

EG: Ruby. He’s never at a loss for words and can talk his way out of — or into — any situation. He’s also an eternal optimist who refuses to ever play a victim, no matter his circumstances.  Oh, and he’s short like me — only with much better hair.

5. What's the process of creating a TV show look like, and what was your reaction when the show got picked up by Netflix?

JH: Creating a show is equal parts creativity, and hard-work. While many stories can be interesting, the big questions is: does the story have legs to turn into a series? I remember Eddie and I being in the car together after our pitch meeting with Netflix talking about how fun it was to develop this show. And especially how much we loved exploring these characters and this neighborhood in a way that is rarely seen on TV or in films. It was great to create a show that accurately depicted Eddie’s childhood both in it’s specificity and the teen world’s universality. And minutes later we got the call and were so excited! 3 years and 2 seasons later, here we are – still excited to be telling this story and equally interested in telling more stories that allow people to see themselves reflected on screen for the first time.

EG: Lauren, Jeremy and I spent six weeks eating Greek Quinoa salads at Panera, laughing a helluva lot and coming up with the bones of the show. I will always have the greatest memories of Ventura Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon as that is where we found out that Netflix had made an offer. We were beyond ecstatic!

6. What Roku device do you have, and what do you love about it?

JH: Roku Streaming Stick — It’s an amazing piece of technology, not only does Roku easily let me maneuver around everywhere, but it’s also compatible and easy to use the mobile app on my phone. I love it!

EG: Roku Premiere. I love its simple interface.

7. What are you currently streaming?

JH: Black Mirror, Fauda, Narcos and Ozark

EG: Ozark and the Ted Bundy Tapes

Roku introduces pet-friendly streaming remote

Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:01 AM PDT

At Roku, we believe TV is for everyone – even for pets! According to customer feedback, many of you lean on the TV to help entertain their playful pooch when they’re not at home. For our favorite furry friends, the television viewing experience can be static, and dare we say, unfulfilling…and that’s ruff.

We recently surveyed our customers and identified a major pet peeve — most dogs can't operate our remote controls to tune in to their favorite shows on a Roku player or Roku TV. More specifically, 72% of Roku owners surveyed believed that their dogs would enjoy TV more if they could use the remote themselves to control what they watch.

Our goal is to get all our customers, including pups, to the show they want to watch, as quickly as possible. In order to enhance the TV experience for all tail-waggers around the globe, we proudly present the Roku Press Paws Remote™.

roku press paws remote

The Press Paws Remote is designed to make it easy for your dog to tune in to their favorite TV entertainment. The Press Paws Remote includes paw-friendly features such as:

  1. Animal-Themed Shortcut Buttons: Ergonomic shortcut buttons get your dog to their favorite shows faster, giving them direct access to pet-themed channels including Animal Planet, where they can catch the latest “Evan Goes Wild” episode, and The Pet Collective on The Roku Channel, where they can watch hours of clips, entertaining memes, and funniest animal videos
  2. Bark Assistant Technology: The Press Paws remote works seamlessly with your Roku player or Roku TV and features “Bark Assistant Technology.” Various commands are at your pet's disposal, like bark-to-play, bark-to-pause (for emergency bio breaks) and bark-to-mute
  3. Built in Sub-WOOFer: We built a Sub-WOOFer into the Press Paws Remote that produces very high frequencies, so your hound’s sound is happy in the home

In addition, The Roku Channel is getting even more paw-some with a row specifically dedicated to our four-legged viewers. Starting on April 1, your pet can tune in to some of their favorites.

10 movies turning 18 this year

Posted: 22 Mar 2019 07:07 AM PDT

Sabienna Bowman has been covering entertainment news since 2010. She currently writes for BustleReelgood, and PopSugar.

Break out the caps and gowns, because these 10 movies are old enough to graduate from high school and enter the wonderful world of adulthood this year. They’re also just old enough to give moviegoers an existential crisis.

Cast your mind back to the year 2001, when Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious” was inescapable, Jack Bauer was preparing to save the world for the first time on 24, and some of the most popular movie franchises ever were just getting started. From Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to Zoolander, many of your favorite films are turning 18 in 2019, proving the old adage right — they really do grow up fast.

1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

It’s been 18 long years since Harry, Hermione, and Ron first set foot in Hogwarts on the big screen. Since then, the franchise has produced seven more films, plus two prequels thanks to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Nearly two decades later and the wizarding world is still going strong.

2. Legally Blonde

What, like it’s hard to become a cult classic? Reese Witherspoon’s peppy and brilliant Elle Woods is as iconic in 2019 as she was in 2001. If you need proof, then look no further than Ariana Grande’s homage to the bend and snap in her “Thank U, Next” music video, or the fact that a third movie is set to hit theaters in 2020.

3. The Fast and the Furious

Vin Diesel has been playing Dominic Toretto long enough for the franchise to earn its driver’s license and then have it taken away for all that drag racing. Eight films and a spinoff later, the movies are drawing in bigger crowds than ever before. If you want to celebrate the franchise’s birthday, Hobbs & Shaw hits theaters on Aug. 2.

4. Monsters, Inc.

Prepare to feel old, because Sully’s adorable human best friend Boo would probably be halfway through college by now. Despite a lackluster sequel, the original Monsters, Inc. is one of Pixar’s classics — and watching Boo say goodbye to her “Kitty” is still a guaranteed tearjerker moment.

5. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

Looking back, 2001 was a banner year for fantasy lovers. Not only did Harry Potter get sorted into Gryffindor, Frodo Baggins left The Shire to kick off his epic adventure to Mordor. The first movie was followed by two more, as well as a second trilogy focused on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

6. The Princess Diaries

Shut up! It’s been 18 years since Mia Thermopolis discovered she was the Princess of Genovia. And much like Elle Woods, Mia’s still a hero in the eyes of her fans. Earlier this year, Anne Hathaway even confirmed that the princess’ journey will continue in a third film.

7. Shrek

Shrek wasn’t the first animated DreamWorks film, but it did turn the studio into the anti-Pixar. Thanks to Shrek and Donkey, kids and parents who don’t want to cry their eyes out can head to the theater to see pop culture referencing, fart joke favoring animated films instead. (Except for the How to Train Your Dragon movies — those will definitely make you cry.)

8. The Others

On the whole, 2001 was a weirdly mediocre year for horror, but The Others is an undeniable standout. The gothic ghost story has a twist ending that feels earned, and an emotional story arc for its characters that will break your heart thanks to Nicole Kidman’s immense talents. Precious few scary movies from ’01 stand the test of time, but this one definitely does.

9. Moulin Rouge!

It seems fitting that Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! Is turning 18, because the technically stunning movie has been a favorite of high school musical devotees since it was released. Between the doomed love story and the frenetic pop song mashups, it’s no wonder this movie has been wowing teens (and everyone else) for so long now.

10. Zoolander

Only Ben Stiller could make Derek Zoolander such a hilarious dummy. The satirical film is a supremely silly sendup of the fashion industry that embodies the early ’00s sense of style and humor perfectly.

Don’t forget to tell these modern classics congratulations in 2019. After 18 years, they’re still just as beloved as they were the day they made their big screen debuts, and that’s no easy feat — just ask Children of the Living Dead (yes, that’s a real movie, you can Google it, I’ll wait).
