Hey everyone! This month, I’ve had a number of folks ask me about some of my favorite streaming hacks and trust me, there are many! With Mother’s Day approaching next month, I’m going to focus on the streaming tips that make mom-life a little easier.

CONTENT IS KING: Give your kids the entertainment they want! With over 5,000 channels on the Roku platform, there is certainly a lot to choose from. Channels such as PBS Kids and Hasbro offer great free entertainment, while KidzBop and Future Scientists will keep your kiddos occupied with some awesome activities. If you’re looking to bring more learning into the living room, Phonics for Kids, HappyKids, HappyKids2 and The Gigglebellies are more great, free options to encourage education. Interested in more? Don’t worry, we’ve already highlighted the top free Roku channels for kids.

YOU’RE IN (REMOTE) CONTROL: The Roku mobile app isn’t just for when you’ve lost your remote. If your kids are so engrossed in their favorite show that they ignore your very polite requests to come to the dinner table, don’t fret. Use the Roku mobile app to pause content (or if you have a Roku TV, turn off the TV completely) from the comforts of the other room. Content may be king but mom will always been the queen of the castle.

FOR KIDS’ EARS ONLY: Speaking of the Roku mobile app, soon multicast private listening will be available to users, which enables up to four iOS or Android devices to access the private listening feature. Private listening enables the TV audio to come out of your mobile device's headphone jack, making it easy to watch content without disturbing anyone. With multicast private listening, this means up to four kids will be able to stream as they please, while you get to enjoy some peace and quiet.

HANDS FREE, THE WAY TO BE: If you’ve had to deal with your child commanding your mobile phone, then you know the pain of trying to get them to give it back. The Play On Roku feature within the Roku mobile app makes it easy to stream your personal videos, music and photos to the TV. You can keep your kiddos hands free of your precious smartphone while still entertaining them with videos from their most recent birthday!

Watching these 6 movies won’t cost you a thing

Every week, we publish a list of free movies to watch on The Roku Channel. We’ve hand picked 6 Hollywood hits this week that you can watch without spending a dime.

8MM (1999): A private investigator is hired to discover if a “snuff film” is authentic or not. Starring Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, and James Gandolfini.

Fun fact: Cage’s Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas makes an appearance in this film. Can you spot it?

Mullholland Falls (1996): In 1950’s Los Angeles, a special crime squad of the LAPD investigates the murder of a young woman. Starring Nick Nolte and Melanie Griffith.

Fun fact: The cast is stacked with Oscar winners and nominees – three winners (Connelly, Sylbert, Fletchers), and six nominees (Nolte, Griffith, Madsen, Dern, Malkovich, Palmenteri).

Reasonable Doubt (2014): A District Attorney has his life turned upside down when he’s involved in a hit and run and another man is arrested for his crime and charged with murder. Starring Samuel L. Jackson and Dominic Cooper.

Fun fact: The movie was filmed in just 27 days from start to finish.

The Two Jakes (1990): The sequel to Chinatown (1974) finds J.J. “Jake” Gittes investigating adultery and murder, and the money that comes from oil. Starring Jack Nicholson and Harvey Keitel.

Fun fact: Nicholson was the lead actor, director, a producer and the narrator of The Two Jakes.

The Russia House (1990): An expatriate British publisher unexpectedly finds himself working for British intelligence to investigate people in Russia. Starring Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Fun fact: This was the first major film from America to be filmed mainly in The Soviet Union – with most scenes being shot in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Gang Related (1997): After murdering an undercover DEA agent, two corrupt cops scramble to cover up what they’ve done. Starring Jim Belushi and Tupac Shakur.

Fun fact: Belushi and Shakur clashed on set due to their different acting styles – Belushi liked to get in rhythm with multiple takes while Tupac preferred to finish the scene in just one or two takes.

Roku to Soon Launch Enhanced Voice Search in UK

Roku will soon make its Enhanced Voice Search feature available to Roku users in the UK. Enhanced Voice Search enables users to use their voice to find entertainment to watch. The new feature will be available for Roku® players through the Roku mobile app, and for the Roku Streaming Stick+ through the remote control. Roku OS 8.1 will begin to roll out through a software update beginning on May 1.

Enhanced Voice Search allows for more natural language understanding and can search for movies, shows, actors and directors, or even launch streaming channels, in a more conversational tone. For example, a user can say things like, "show me comedies", "find The Grand Tour" or "launch hayu".

The Roku mobile app, available for iOS® and Android, acts as a remote, streams media from a mobile device to the TV, includes a keyboard and offers features like voice search and private listening. In addition, Roku OS 8.1 will enable private listening for up to four devices concurrently for all Roku players.

Live and linear news + new discovery features coming to The Roku Channel!

Since the launch of The Roku Channel, we have focused on bringing Roku customers an easy way to access the free entertainment they love. Today we're happy to enhance the experience and add one of the top customer-requested features: live and linear news. In addition, we are adding new discovery features and expanding our library of movies and TV.

The Roku Channel will offer ABC News Live, a new 24/7 live and linear news stream from ABC News that gives viewers access to breaking news and live event coverage from all over the world. Roku customers can also view live and linear news feeds from Cheddar, covering technology, media and entertainment; PeopleTV, delivering celebrity, pop culture, lifestyle news and more; and others.

To improve content discovery and accessibility for our customers we're adding new features such as "Collections," to help dive in deeper to explore content in curated thematic collections, and "Continue Watching," to easily get back into the movie or TV show that's been started. These updates will be available to customers with Roku OS 8.1 through a phased software roll out starting in May.The Roku Channel continues to expand its entertainment library, bringing more content from existing channel publishers, such as FilmRise, Vidmark and more to the forefront, and working with leading studios such as Lionsgate, Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros. and others.
