We’re celebrating International Women's Day by featuring some of the best female directors and highlighting their best work and groundbreaking milestones.

Kathryn Bigelow is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. She worked on a number of different genre films, including Point Break and Zero Dark Thirty. She is most well-known for The Hurt Locker, for which she received an Oscar for Best Director (the first woman ever!)

Ava DuVernay made history in 2012 by becoming the first black woman to win the Directing Award in the U.S. dramatic competition at the Sundance Film Festival for her second feature film, Middle of Nowhere. For her work on Selma, DuVernay was the first black female director to be nominated for both a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar for Best Picture.

Patty Jenkins is the only female to direct a film with a budget of over $150 million. She directed blockbusters like Monster (streaming for free on The Roku Channel), Wonder Woman and is slated to direct Woman 1984.

Michelle MacLaren is a Canadian television director and producer. She has directed for some of the most popular shows on TV, including Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Westworld. She has been nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards.
