5 tips for streaming local news, weather and radio on your Roku device

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 09:25 AM PST

This post was updated on 02/07/2019.

The first thing I do when I wake up is turn on my local news. Before rushing off to work, I make sure to catch the weather and traffic reports. It's become a part of my everyday routine – I even know all my local newscasters by name, as I'm sure you do too!

Lucky for you and me, it's easier than ever to get local content on your Roku device. Check out some tips and must-add channels below.

1. For local news lovers

NewsON (free) offers live and on-demand local newscasts and local news clips from 200+ stations in 130 markets. This channel is essential for local news junkies. I watch this channel a lot when I travel so I can watch my local Bay Area newscasts even when I'm across the country.

Haystack TV (free) is the perfect channel for local news junkies. It allows you to watch 200+ local and world news channels for free – with no cable or satellite subscription required.

Another option for local news is CBS All Access ($5.99 per month, after a free 7-day trial), which offers 126 live and local CBS channels. Check here to see if it's available in your local market. In addition to news, the channel offers on demand access to thousands of episodes of your favorite CBS shows, such as The Good Wife and Blue Bloods, previous seasons and fan favorites including CSI:Miami and MacGyver.

DIRECTV NOW, fuboTV, Hulu with Live TVPlayStation VueSling TV and YouTube TV offer local channels in select markets.

2. To enhance your antenna content

If you watch TV programs over-the-air through an antenna you've probably found yourself reaching for the remote wanting to replay or pause whatever is on your TV. Enter Simple.tv and Tablo TV. These streaming channels enable you to watch, pause and record live TV through your Roku player or Roku TV model! Note: additional hardware is required. Visit simple.tv or TabloTV.com/Roku for more info.

If you have a Roku TV, learn more about our Live TV Pause feature that allows you to pause up to 90 minutes of live television.

3. For personalized weather reports

Don't leave the house until you check the weather report! The free WeatherNation channel delivers hourly and extended forecasts based on your location. It also provides live weather newscasts.
