The best and worst TV and movie reboots

Sabienna Bowman has been covering entertainment news since 2010. She currently writes for BustleReelgood, and PopSugar.

Reboot fever has been gripping Hollywood for years, and it’s showing no signs of letting up. In 2019 alone, viewers can expect TV reboots of The Twilight Zone, NYPD Blue, and Veronica Mars. Meanwhile, cinephiles can head to the theaters to see The Lion King, Aladdin, and Dumbo (and yes, those are just the ones from Disney). Some of these reboots will be great, some will simply be OK, and some will no doubt make you wonder who greenlit them in the first place. Such is the nature of the reboot.

Bringing back a beloved TV or movie franchise can either go really well, or absolutely tank. Below, we’ve listed six of the best and a few of the worst reboot examples. The best is a collection of happy surprises. Reboots that fans didn’t expect a whole lot from, that ended up being incredible.

Meanwhile, the list of the worst is full of contenders that everyone had high hopes for but ended up being total let downs.

Each list is a reminder that when it comes to reboots, it’s best to expect the unexpected.

The best TV & movie reboots

1. One Day At A Time

Netflix’s recently canceled reboot of Norman Leer’s 1975 series was a pleasant surprise. The comedy focused on a Cuban-American family anchored by a single mother and war vet, who raised her two kids with the help of her vivacious mother. By expertly balancing political issues with warm-hearted family storytelling, the series proved to be the finest example of the modern day multi-camera sitcom.

2. Queer Eye

When Netflix announced they were rebooting Queer Eye, the reality series felt doomed from the start. The very idea seemed outdated, but three seasons later the new Fab Five are making viewers cry on the regular. Queer Eye is a moving testament to the power that lies in kindness and helping others that makes heroes out of its subjects and stars.

3. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

The 1968 original Planet of the Apes is an allegorical masterpiece. Even the original sequels couldn’t do it justice, so fans can be forgiven for being skeptical of a prequel trilogy. However, Rise of the Planet of the Apes kicked off a trio of smart, captivating action films that added another layer of depth to an already classic movie.

4. Spider-Man: Homecoming

No one wanted another Spider-Man reboot so soon after the previous one. But if Marvel and Sony had listened, the world would have been robbed of the first truly great Spider-Man movie. Tom Holland captured everything that makes Peter Parker such a unique hero, and made the character feel essential again.

5. Battlestar Galactica

Ronald D. Moore took an old-fashioned sci-fi series and brought it into the 21st century with grit, kick butt female characters, and an uneasy modern sense of paranoia. Battlestar Galactica is nothing short of a triumph, and a prime example of how to do a reboot right.

6. Mad Max: Fury Road

Furiosa revitalized the Mad Max franchise with her strength, determination, and sheer cool factor. The 2015 film made returning to the post-apocalyptic world of the ’80s franchise a pleasure.

The worst TV & movie reboots

1. Planet of the Apes (2001)

The 2001 Planet of the Apes is a slap in the face to all that’s great about the original. It’s a silly waste of a perfectly good Mark Wahlberg, and it almost made fans of the franchise too bitter to embrace Hollywood’s second go at making a modern take on the 1968 film.

2. Ghostbusters

Given the awful behavior of the internet trolls who condemned the 2016 Ghostbusters before they saw it, most people wanted nothing more than to see the women-led reboot succeed. However, despite having a terrific cast, the movie just fell flat. It’s not unwatchable, but it also never quite captures the originality or magic of the 1984 film.

3. Man of Steel

Hey, you know which superhero didn’t need Zack Snyder’s dark and gritty treatment? Superman. Man of Steel is a dreary take on a superhero who was so perfectly brought to life by the late Christopher Reeve in the ’70s.

For better or worse, reboots are here to stay — all movie and TV fans can do is hope that more of them land on their feet.
