Just in time for the premiere of TNT’s highly anticipated drama, The Alienist, we caught up with Daniel Brühl, who stars as psychologist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler. Below, he reveals how he prepared for the role, what it was like to work with co-stars Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning, and why audiences will love The Alienist.
Tune into new episodes of The Alienist Mondays at 9/8c only on TNT!
Why do you think audiences will love The Alienist?
The Alienist is so many things: a gripping psychological thriller, a dark mystery tale, but also a highly entertaining history lesson about NYC in the gilded age and the beginning of all those fascinating sciences, such as psychology, forensics and more.
The Alienist has a star-studded cast, including yourself! What's it like working with Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning?
Absolute joy and the greatest chemistry from day one! We loved each other and even spent most of our free time together.
How did you prepare for the role of Dr. Laszlo Kreizler?
My wife is a psychotherapist, which was very handy! She gave me stuff to read (Freud, Breuer, Jung…) but also put me in touch with other psychologists, who were experts on the field of criminal psychology.
What 3 words describe your character?
Progressive, obsessive, curious.
What were your first thoughts after reading the pilot? Did you also read the Caleb Carl novel?
I was mesmerized by Caleb Carr’s book. I could not put it away; the combination of history and the crime story is so compelling.
What are some of the biggest challenges in filming a show set in 1896?
Recreating the time so that every one of us would believe it was very demanding, but thanks to the amazing work of all the departments we did achieve that. It felt as though we travelled in time. Nothing felt fake; I have never have experienced it to such extent.
What shows are you currently binge watching?
Mindhunter, Animal Kingdom, Stranger Things, and The Crown.
